Types of Membership
The Minoa Fire Department has three main classes of members: Active Members, Life Members, and Support Members. Active Members are further divided into Full, Probationary, Restricted, and Junior Firefighter subclasses.
All members are expected to follow the department's Code of Ethics and avoid conflicts of interest. They are prohibited from receiving any financial profit from the company.
The department offers opportunities for training and advancement, including the possibility of obtaining Exempt Volunteer Fire Fighter status after five years of service.
Active Members
Active Members are required to meet specific residency requirements, be of good moral character, and attend calls and trainings. They are subject to termination or suspension for misconduct, insubordination, or incompetence.
Full Members have full voting rights, may hold office, and can participate in all department activities. They are also eligible to become Life Members after 20 years of service.
Probationary Members attend emergencies, trainings, and events but cannot vote, hold office, or serve on committees. They may attend social events and participate in fundraising. Probationary Members must complete a probationary period of 6 to 18 months during which they must meet specific requirements outlined in department policies. They may be removed for cause during this period.
Restricted Members are those between 16 and 18 years old. They can participate in many activities but cannot vote or hold office. They automatically become Probationary Members at 18.
Junior Firefighters are 14 and 15 years old and participate in a youth training program. They require guardian permission and their activities are limited by Junior Firefighter policies and procedures.
Life Members
Life Membership is granted to Full Members after 20 years of service, or to those permanently disabled in the line of duty.
There are Active Life Members and Retired Life Members. Active Life Members can participate in all department activities while Retired Life Members are limited to attending meetings, serving as executive officers or directors (if they have attended at least five regular meetings in the past year), and assisting with administrative functions.
Support Members
Support Members are non-operational members who assist the department in many useful ways. They have no voting rights, cannot hold office, and may be terminated at will.
