February 2, 2025 – On the evening of January 24, 2025, at approximately 9:45 p.m., the North West Fire District responded to a major fire at the New Legacy Apartments off Meigs Road, near Baldwinsville, NY. Firefighters arrived to find heavy flames and thick smoke pouring from the roof of the three-story building.

Multiple fire departments and emergency personnel joined the effort, working swiftly and decisively to ensure the safety of residents and limit further damage. Their dedication and professionalism were vital in managing this challenging incident.

Incident Overview

Preliminary investigations suggest the fire originated in the attic, where it spread rapidly above the top-floor apartments.

Though the building was equipped with functional smoke alarms and sprinkler systems, attic fires present a unique challenge. Because sprinklers are typically not installed in attic spaces, the suppression system did not activate in the initial stages of the blaze.

Firefighters and police officers worked quickly to assist residents in evacuating. Despite their efforts, the intensity of the fire led to a partial roof collapse, further complicating firefighting operations. In total, 24 apartments were significantly damaged or destroyed, leaving numerous residents displaced.

Challenges Faced

One of the greatest challenges in battling this fire was its location. Attic fires often go undetected for extended periods, as they burn above living spaces and beyond the reach of standard fire suppression systems.

When crews arrived, they were met with an advanced fire already well-developed in the attic space. Immediate defensive operations were necessary to contain the flames and prevent further destruction.

The firefighters of the Minoa Fire Department recognize and commend the valiant efforts of the North West Fire District and all responding departments. Their bravery, skill, and unwavering commitment made a critical difference in protecting lives and property during this devastating fire.
